First time? You need a free app to join
A BBS is not a web page, so you join one with a telnet clientA free app for joining a board: it connects to the board's address and shows its screens., a free app that connects to the board's address. On a phone: TERMinator, for Android or iPhone, or MuffinTerm for iPhone. Termius, free for Android and iPhone, works well too. On a computer: SyncTERM, for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Then type a board's address and port into the app, or click the address if your app is set up for links. More choices are on the apps for joining page, and what to expect when you connect on the first call page.
A board with a padlock takes SSHAn encrypted way of connecting to a board, beside telnet: what you type is scrambled on the way, so only the board can read it., and then you need no app at all. The ssh command is already on most computers: ssh -p <port> yourhandle@the.address, in Terminal on a Mac and on Linux, or in Windows Terminal or PowerShell. Use the address and port from the padlock line, and the call is encrypted as well. How to connect with SSH.
